Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Matilda Mae Masks unique?

Each mask is made by hand by me personally. I do not pre-make any masks. Once you place your order, the cutting and sewing begins. My masks have filter pockets, are made made with cotton fabrics and are durable for repeat washing and and wearing. Each style features top-stitching which helps to ensure your masks keep their shape after multiple washes. I make sure that fabric patterns are always facing the right way (no upside or sideways images on your masks). I put a lot of love and attention into each mask that I sew - checking stitches, trimming threads.

I also know that if the mask looks good and fits well, it is more likely to be worn. Some of my best clients include teachers, physical therapists and hair stylists who need to be in their masks all day!

My face is round/wide/narrow/long/bearded, will your masks fit me?

I make each mask to order. If you need something a little wider, a little narrower, a little longer - send me a note! I will do my best to recommend the best design for you or make adjustments to existing styles (within reason). You can even be like Van Gogh with only one ear- no worries! I got a design for you!

I’ve added pleats to the bottom for narrow faces, nose wires for people with glasses, even reflective logos to keep people safe.

Are Matilda Mae masks safe?

I wear a mask because if the experts are correct, I could potentially prevent someone from getting sick and dying. If the experts are wrong , the most I’m out is the inconvenience of wearing a piece of fabric on my face. I think of it as an extra opportunity to accessorize. (I mean wearing a mask is a more comfortable and more helpful than wearing a bra, and we do that just because society says we should! ha!)

The CDC recommends that you wear masks in public settings when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

According to the CDC “Masks with at least 2 layers of fabric are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are widely used by people in public settings.”

While all Matilda Mae masks are 2 layers of cotton fabric, like any non-surgical mask, they are NOT rated for disease control.

If you need more details and some cool graphics, check out this video. Quick highlight - it explains that after the N95 and surgical masks, cotton provides the next best protection. It also explains that neck gaiters actually do more harm than good.

I’ll repeat that for the gaiter-wearing folks in the back..

NECK GAITERS DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD!

Each mask is personally sanitized by me before it is packaged up.

Can I place a custom order?

Absolutely! Send me a message at hello@matildamaestudio.com. Please provide as much information as possible in that initial email - Shape you are looking for, quantity, deadline and any details about the customization - is it just a specific color or are you needing a logo added, etc.

How long will my order take?

I try to make most orders in 2 days and have them delivered within a week. I am currently a one person operation, so please be considerate and patient and I will be do my best to work in that timeframe.

Why is shipping done via UPS?

I am a supporter of the USPS, but right now their resources need to be focused on timely delivery of mail-in ballots. (They also have unfortunately lost 3 important packages.) In an effort to free up their resources, I will be shipping via UPS exclusively. The price difference is less than a dollar and I ship with UPS’s carbon neutral option.

If you live in the Denver area, you can choose the local pick-up option. Send me an email at hello@matildamaestudio.com to coordinate pick-up.

How should I wash my Matilda Mae face mask?

You should was your masks regularly. You can toss them in the washing machine. All the fabrics have been pre-washed and dried. You can toss them in the dryer or air dry. If possible, place the mask in direct sunlight if you air dry.
